Year 9 students at Essendon Keilor College take part in the City Centre program offered by the Education Foundation. As part of this program, students use knowledge and skills from across the curriculum to conduct active research in the Melbourne CBD about a chosen topic. Staff at Essendon Keilor College have successfully integrated LOTE into the project. They have created a series of tasks that ensure that students use their language skills as a requirement of the project. Their aim was to increase student engagement with LOTE and improve its profile in the school, by linking language study with key programs already in place in the school. "The teachers all enjoy teaching this unit. It was a lot of work setting it up but the motivated students make it all worth while. Because of this project, teachers in other subject areas have become more aware of the value of LOTE study. For the students, this cross curricular project is a real highlight. They love being out and about in the real world and connecting LOTE with what they're learning in other subjects. Getting the chance for authentic communication with native speakers gives them a real sense of achievement." Visit the Western Region CeLOTE website for more information about the City Centre Project. |
