Absent Without Leave

Public Service

Where an employee is absent without approved leave, all reasonable attempts must be made to contact the employee and ascertain the reason for the absence.  This should include written notification to the employee.  After 20 working days, where the employee fails to provide any reasonable grounds for the absence or fails to return to work, the Department is entitled to treat the employee as having resigned and the employment as having been terminated by the employee at his or her initiative.

It is recommended that certified/registered mail be used for all correspondence on this issue.
