Careers and Recruitment

Student Wellbeing Staff

The wellbeing of students in State Government Schools is enhanced by the provision of a range of specialist support in a variety of areas.

Staff supporting student wellbeing in schools have a variety of roles and responsibilities. Typical student wellbeing positions include Psychologists, Guidance Officers, Social Workers, Speech Pathologists, Visiting Teachers, Youth Workers, Student Welfare Co-ordinators and Primary Welfare Officers but there may be others depending on the school welfare program.

The employment structure under which a welfare staff member is engaged will depend on the employment arrangements that apply to that position.

  • Welfare staff in positions funded through regional budgets will generally be employed as Victorian Public Service (VPS) staff (under the Public Administration Act 2004). These staff comprise Student Support Services and are often known as Student Support Services Officers (SSSOs).
  • Welfare staff in positions funded through school budgets will be employed in the Teaching Service either as teachers or education support class employees (under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006).
