Education Support Class Career Structure

The Education Support Class structure is the career structure for support staff in Government Schools in Victoria, Australia.

Education Support Class employees make a valuable contribution to the lives and interests of children through their contribution to school administration and operations and through direct support to teachers and students in the delivery of educational programs. An environment where the contribution that an education support class employee makes to the education of children and the life of a school is recognised, school expectations are clearly stated, and professional development objectives and priorities are effectively identified is essential in positively influencing the professional growth and development of education support class employees.

Education Support Class positions are diverse and cover the delivery of support services that include school administration and operations (e.g. human resources, finance, facilities, grounds maintenance), school support services (e.g. library, laboratory, information technology, out of school care, canteen), direct teaching and student support (e.g. classroom assistance to teachers, careers counselling, student health and wellbeing).

There are two Education Support classification levels with 5 work value ranges, as follows:

Movement of an Education Support Class employee to a higher classification level may only be by way of promotion based on merit selection.

Each salary range within a classification level represents the work value of a position. The work value of a position is determined in accordance with the Dimensions of Work.

Salary Range Reviews

The salary range of a Education Support Class employee may be reviewed each year in the context of any changes to the work value of a position. The review will include an assessment of the work the principal requires to be undertaken and the performance of the employee.

This review may result in movement to either a higher or lower salary range, or no change to the salary range, provided that the salary range cannot fall below the salary range determined on translation under the Agreement or on appointment to that position, whichever is the latter.

On movement to a higher salary range within each classification level following a review, an Education Support Class employee’s salary shall be determined as set out for salary on promotion.
