Voiceover: We can also teach students how to work out the meanings of unfamiliar words as they read, This is helping them develop their ‘meaning making motors.’ Look at how David guides his class to work out the actions that they used to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Teacher: With those words that we just looked at, who can tell me what technique did we use to try to find out its meaning?

Student: Syllables.

Student: Breaking up familiar words.

Teacher: Probably, breaking up into familiar words.

Student: Brainstorming.
