Voiceover: A third aspect of ‘getting knowledge ready’ is guiding the students to align their existing knowledge with the text that they will read.
Voiceover: Look at how Petrina does this for the text ‘Women in ancient Egypt.’
Teacher: When we look at the text, what do we notice about it? How is the text organised?
Student: Subheadings
Teacher: Can you give me an example of one of the subheadings?
Student: Rights and privileges
Teacher: Very good. So ‘rights and privileges’. So how do we know it’s a subheading? What makes it a subheading?
Student: The subheadings aren’t as big as the actual heading
Teacher: So if we look at the title, we can see the title is in large type, where the subheading is a little bit smaller. But it’s still not as small as the information, but we know it’s a subheading because it’s a little bit bigger.
Teacher: What sort of clues do the subheadings tell us about the topic?
Student: Such as ‘wealthy women’s like a summary of the information. So mostly that information is about wealthy women.
